Lynnala’s Homeownership Success Story
It took Lynnaia several years to realize her dream of homeownership. She is now enjoying her beautiful, safe new (to her) home thanks to the knowledge and help she received from taking the Home Stretch workshop and her Homeownership Adviser.
This video was shot by the people at the Minnesota Home Ownership Center.

Success Story: Ms. Xiong
Homeowner Ms. May Xiong sitting with Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) of Minneapolis staff member and Hmong translator, Ying Xiong. Ms. Xiong summarizes that she has found the staff to be so helpful that she views the staff as a second family.Similar to many NeighborWorks affiliate organizations, NHS of Minneapolis trains and assists people to become homeowners and to remain in those homes. This is just one story of the organization’s impact in the community.
Ms. May Xiong story: May purchased her home during a Minnesotan winter so was unable to assess the roof. In spring the melting snow began to leak into her home. May needed a repair but did not have the financial means to fix it. She was referred to NHS of Minneapolis, which helped her attain a state deferred loan. By residing in her home for ten years the loan will be forgiven without May having to make a payment. Now May returns to the organization whenever the need for home repair arises. “Because of NHS I am still in my home” May says, “without NHS I think my home would be gone by now.” May’s tip to other first time homeowners in Minneapolis is, “Go to NHS! They will help you.” at Neighborhood Housing Services of Minneapolis, Inc.

Minneapolis Veteran Greatly Benefits from Neighborhood Housing Services’ Assistance

In the Victory Neighborhood of North Minneapolis, Minnesota, Gerald and Grace Bernhardt have resided in their home for around 40 years. It was recently brought to Gerald’s attention that work was needed on their home. Gerald, a 78-year-oldBernhardts

veteran, is legally blind and often had trouble getting around his home.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) suggested that some of the railing and lighting needed to be replaced for safety reasons.

The carpeting on the stairway of their house had become so worn that Gerald tripped and fell down the stairs multiple times. In addition, there was little to no lighting in the stairway making it a dangerous area. They also needed handrails in the stairway and on the rear stoop for safety reasons.

The Bernhardts called for estimates from a few companies suggested by the VA, but found it difficult to receive help. After many phone calls they were discouraged with the poor service they were receiving. “They didn’t seem to think it was worth the time,” Grace Bernhardt said, “One guy wasn’t even interested because there wasn’t enough money involved.”

Grace Bernhardt returned to the VA for more suggestions and was supplied with a list of potential organizations to assist in their necessary renovations. At the bottom of the list was Neighborhood Housing Services of Minneapolis (NHS), a nonprofit organization near North Minneapolis. Grace Bernhardt believes NHS should be at the top of the list.

Neighborhood Housing Services works to promote sustainable housing and communities in Minneapolis. Since 1980, NHS has worked closely with homeowners to help them get necessary renovations done. After seeing NHS’ contact information, Grace decided to call and inquire about how they could assist. They were put in contact with NHS’ Construction Rehab Specialist, James Richardson. Richardson also served our country, so he has a particular interest in assisting veterans.

James Richardson walked through the work with the homeowners and after hearing their story was compelled to help in any way he could. “That’s when I put the ball in motion,” he said, “I found out he was not being assisted after he served our country. NHS provided him with good service.”

After feeling hopeless with the search, the Bernhardt’s are very pleased with the service they received from the staff at NHS. “He didn’t hesitate,” Gerald Bernhardt said, “He came over right away and got the job done.” After feeling hopeless with the search, NHS was able to get the Bernhardts connected with the right people to get the work completed.

The repairs were completed quickly, and the Bernhardts are more than pleased. “You guys are such a blessing,” Grace Bernhardt said about NHS. Gerald, Grace, and their dog Emma plan to stay in the house for years to come.
